Society bucks the trend in matches with Musselburgh Old Golf Course!

Our challenge match with Musselburgh Old Golf Club was held at Musselburgh on Saturday April 26th 2008.

This was the fourth time this particular match had been held, with Musselburgh coming out on top in the previous three.

However, we are delighted to report that this trend has been stopped and we were victorious by 3½ matches to 2½.

As is always the case, the match was played in exactly the right spirit, keen golfing competitiveness balanced by a considerable amount of light-hearted "banter", both on the course and at the 19th hole.

Although other matches went to the last green, our captain, Brian Graham, played a pivotal role in the result by holing an excellent putt there to gain a half for himself and his partner, Martin Fletcher. He therefore had to hastily prepare a victory speech to replace the one he usually gives !

To honour our first victory the complete match scores are recorded -

Jim Maguire and Bob Burns defeated Billy Finnigan and Harry Hamilton
Douglas Foulis and Robin Morris lost to Keith Harris and Andy Steedman
Lionel Freedman and Ian Thom defeated Ronnie Jones and John Jones
Euan Chalmers and Alastair Chalmers lost to David Barraclough and Peter Rattray
Martin Fletcher & Brian Graham halved with Robin McGregor and Jimmy Duffield
Ken Gordon and Eugene Bradley defeated Grant Campbell and Russell Carroll

Musselburgh have recently introduced a new website and their "slant" on the match is available there just now. [more]

The return event at the Links using Hickory clubs will be held on Wednesday 2nd July 2008. Will the Society continue their victorious ways ? Will Musselburgh exact their revenge ?
