March 7th 2018

Members and friends of the Society met for the 274th anniversary celebration of the signing of the first written rules of golf by John Rattray. This year we chose the Malmaison Hotel in the heart of Leith.

Society Secretary, Brian Graham, welcomed everyone and paid a warm tribute to Robin Morris, one of our founder members, who had sadly died a few weeks before.

An excellent meal was followed by a fascinating talk
from our speaker Jim Scanlon, a member of both our Society and the Leith Historical Society. His subject was "The Enlightened Golfers". He talked about Andrew Duncan, Sir Henry Raeburn, Benjamin Rush (A signatory to the American Declaration of Independence), Sir Stuart Thriepland, Alexander Wood, Gilbert Innes, Robert McNair and Benjamin Bell.

Some of these people are more well-known that others, but Jim talked about the one main factor they definitely had in common - all were connected with John Rattray or Leith Links. A fascinating talk, so thanks for that Jim.

Society President, John Dixon, closed our meeting by thanking Brian Graham for his organisation, Malmaison for an excellent dinner and everyone for supporting the Society.
