Hickory Open 2008

"For a memorable golfing experience using traditional hickory clubs, come to Leith Links and play on the very turf where golf's earliest rules were written"

The winners of the 6th Hickory Open were Bruntsfield Short Hole, Steven Doyle and Paul Middleton becoming the first team to retain the trophy.

The day dawned with glorious sunshine, but by the time the first team teed-off it had clouded over and it did not take too long before the rains came. Of course, Scottish golfers learn to take this in their stride !

As well as our main sponsors, we are indebted to Bruce Stevenson for their assistance with the event

and also to Edinburgh Leisure for setting up our 5-hole course

The other finalists were the 2006 winners, Billy Finnegan and Scott McFarlane of Musselburgh Old Course. However, they generously conceded that the better team on the day won.

The 3rd and 4th play-off was between Broomie, David Kirkwood and William Wright, and the Foot of Leith Walk Golfing Society, represented by the father and son pairing of Alastair and Euan Chalmers. Broomie were victorious and deservedly took 3rd place.

17 teams took part this year, the highest number there has been for a few years.

The well-known Leither Cornie Waugh presented the trophy and prizes. Cornie has been a strong supporter of the Society since we were formed and gives us unstinting help behind the scenes, for which we are extremely grateful

About the trophy ....

The club on the Hickory Open trophy is a mashie (5 iron is the closest modern-day equivalent) and was made by Hendry and Bishop circa 1905. It is stamped as "made in Edinburgh" and was almost certainly made at their workshop in Stead's Place, Leith. It was restored and donated to the club by Philip Knowles. The mounting board and inscription were made and donated by David Kirkwood of Alexander Kirkwood & Son, Albany Street, Edinburgh
