Information about the Society

There are many books and websites on the history of Leith, but the importance of the creation of the first rules of golf in the town is either not given sufficient emphasis or not even mentioned at all.

A few years ago an attempt to change this was started, which quickly evolved into the creation of the Leith Rules Golf Society

The Society has sought to publicise the importance of this in a number of ways, the most prominent to date being the organising of golf using hickory clubs on Leith Links each year.

Our "home" is at 1 Leith Links, Edinburgh EH6 7QR. This is the clubhouse and pavilion of the Leith Franklin Academicals Cricket Club, which, since 1852, has stood on what was in 1744 the third fairway. We are delighted to have this address which is so strongly associated with our history and with our main annual events

Our logo is from David Allan's "Procession of the Silver Club with tuck of drum" circa 1780. The club, with attached engraved balls presented by past captains, was carried through the streets by a Council official, with drummers to draw attention and the town guard to ensure security

President of the Society, Douglas Foulis (formerly captain of the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers at Muirfield) presents the first member, Rev Ian Gilmour, with a coloured version of the logo.  Ian is the Church of Scotland minister of the parish, a keen golfer and an active member of the Society.  Many of his predecessors in the 17th & 18th century disapproved of and discouraged the playing of golf on the Links. We are delighted Ian has broken with that tradition !
